Well it has been a while!! There has been a lot of changes at Pioneer Coffee Roastery since our last post and there will be more to come.............. for the better of course. Our roaster Miss Kate has continued to excel in her roasting. Kate is an amazing roaster, not only has she been able to perfect and improve many of our coffee's but she has also created her very own blend- "Katie's coffee" with which she won a Silver medal at the Australian CSR Golden Bean roasting competition 2010/2011 in the milk based section. Miss Kate also received a Bronze for her entry in the Australian category. We are so proud of Kate (although we think she deserved gold!!!) it is such an amazing achievement. More on "Katie's Coffee" in another blog.
At Pioneer we have slowly been updating the menu. We have now incorporated a lot of fresh gourmet salads which have been a huge success. You will see many improvements to the menu over the coming weeks and months and we are really excited about this. Next time you drop in for a coffee why not stay for lunch or one of our fabulous handmade cakes/slices. All our cakes, slices and meals are made by Elise & Greg @ Pioneer so they are unique.
Rhys has taken over as our Head Barista at Pioneer. Rhys is an amazing Barista and we are so thankful he is part of our team. Rhys has also enjoyed success placing 8th at the recent AASCA Barista Competition in QLD. Such a great achievement for someone on their first entry and we are so proud of him.
We are in the process of creating a facebook page. This way we can keep up to date with all our customers. It will also be used to let everyone know what we will be serving up for the day- both in food and coffee. So next time you are on look us up Pioneer Coffee Roastery Yandina. We will be uploading some special photos.

It was great news for our ROASTER last week, with Kate taking out two medals.
The recent Golden Bean Roasting awards were held down at Port Macquarie, NSW.
The event is held every year by Cafe Biz to find the countrys best roasters.
With over 700 different coffees from all round Australia the comp was the largest ever. We are very proud of our roaster Kate Clarke who took out two medals. Silver medal in the Australian Catergory and a Bronze in the filter class. We done to Kate and she continues the success of Pioneer Coffee at this event!!!

The 2010 AASCA Qld Barista Championship/Latte art/Cupping Comps will be held in December. These events are the starting point for the Australian Championships to be held at the Gold Coast in January 2010. For entry info and dates please go to the AASCA website at www.aasca.com. Good Luck to all!

Valley Fiesta

Last saturday saw the Valley Fiesta in Brisbane. This event helps raise money for the "Hope for the Homeless" and I was more than happy to attend.
Thanks to Mark at Cleanskin for the invite. It didnt take much seen there was a two group Synesso to play on.

Qld Barista Competition

The Qld leg of the AASCA Barista competition was held in Brisbanes Queen St mall a few weeks ago. Pioneer Coffee was represented by Kate Clarke, our head barista at the roastery.

Over the weekend the Australasian Specialty Coffee Association, (AASCA, www.aasca.com ) held the Qld state final of the Australian Barista Competition. The competition is run in accordance to the WBC (world barista championship) format with competitors competing for the national title and a trip to Copenhagen to represent Australia later this year. Local Yandina resident and Head Barista of Pioneer Coffee, Kate Clarke, entered this year and placed very well amongst some of Qld’s best baristas. The competition puts baristas skill both technically and sensory to the test as well as judging professionalism, creativity, and passion.

Kate is a first time competitor in this the ultimate coffee competition and placed a very respectable 5th place, gaining the professional recognition she has worked hard for over the last 3 years. The competition involves baristas making 4 cappuccinos, 4 espressos, and 4 signature beverages. Baristas are judged and scored on technical aptitude, as well as the taste and appearance of their beverages. Kate scored very highly especially with her signature drink the Yandina Screamer, a cocktail type espresso beverage with ginger, macadamia, and chocolate.

AASCA certified barista judge, Jason Joffe, says the level of skill and professionalism this year was a huge step up from last year, showing that there are a few places doing as good a coffee as our southern state neighbors. With so many cafes on the Sunshine Coast, Jason was disappointed that there was only 1 competitor from the coast. “It is a great chance to showcase your skill, and win or lose it’s a fantastic opportunity for baristas to lift their game”. In order to ensure that the coast is not left behind next year, Jason will be holding free “Barista Jams” for Sunshine Coast baristas in order to help everyone to get a better coffee on the coast. “Personally I believe that the aim of these competitions is to lift everyone’s coffee making standards. I will be satisfied the day I can walk into any café and have a great coffee. At the moment I think there would be less than 10 on the Sunshine Coast where I would be happy with the level of coffee being served.”

Any baristas interested in local “Jams” should register their details with Jason at Pioneer Coffee. The get together will be a place to discuss ideas, techniques, coffee, and hopefully put together a team that will travel to Brisbane and have Barista Jams with some of Qld’s best baristas.

This weekend we had the sunshine Coast Coffee Expo held at Joyce Mayne in Chancellor Park. It was a highly successful day with over 2000 people through the doors. Our little Giotto made us proud with an astonishing amount of coffees being made. We made about 700 coffees over the weekend with a domestic machine. Now that is quality. Our coffee was a hit, we came home with almost empty cars. Now time for a holiday I think.

This weekend just passed saw the Café Biz coffee expo held at The Rocks in Sydney. There were many events organized for the day, one of which was the “Equal Golden Bean Roasters Awards” , the one we were particularly interested in. So to all our loyal supporters the great news is:

Pioneer Coffee Roastery was awarded 3 Bronze Medals in the Milk Based Class. We placed 7th, 8th, and 11th, with our Heritage, Sunday & Mocha-Java Blends. Not too bad with over 250 entries.

"Dec's On Buderim" on Burnett Street. This is a fantastic location with views that are 2nd to none. Great coffee and great food,open breakfast,lunch and dinner.

"My Place" in Coolum is now open after months of remodelling. This great open plan cafe is on David Low Way, just South of the Surf Club. It is possibly the best cafe setting on the coast as you sit on the deck and look out at open water. Also open breakfast,lunch and dinner. Stop in and have a coffee, you will love it!!!

Sunday saw the Queensland heats of the AASCA Barista Championship. The competition was tight and the level has certainly risen since last year. The competition is run in accordance with the WBC regulations and competitors are tested under pressure. With 15 mins set-up time to get the feel for the machines, set-up, and environment, the barista must then present the judges with 4 Espressos, 4 Cappuccinos, and 4 signiture beverages in 15 mins.

Well, as the end of year approaches, held back only by a quick festive season, its generally a time we reflect on the year that was. Most of it can be seen by just scrolling to the bottom of this blog and reading up, but for the consise retrospect, read on...

January saw the completion and launch of my first large scale project. Getting into the supermarket game is tough, it is an extremely brand aware society. So to launch a high quality, good looking, great tasting coffee onto prime shelf real estate was a massive effort. Oh, lets not forget that its an extra 20 tonne of coffee a year. But sadly the completion of that challange timed nicely with the presentation of a new, far more exciting one

..: Poineer Coffee Roastery :..

Come February I was jobless, homeless and on my way to Qld!!! A few weeks of getting up to speed (work and home) we were up to our ears in the roastery. Some of the major highlights of the setup were definately meeting Luke and pulling shots in the office (turned into coffee bar with Alan in corner), unloading the roaster and positioning it, hooking it up... and of course firing it up (while contracters were still busy with it). The next set of highlights was seeing the reactions of our good customers who now take the roastery as a haven from the outside world. Guess its true, you can get lost in the coffee. Then we have our wholesale, picking up our first account was a rush, so satisfying (after going to the Key bar many times outside of work I can say its a surreal but mindblowing feeling watching strangers drinking coffee you roasted, prepared by somebody else who you trained, out of cups you designed, through hard work you've put in(and help of course). Lets not forget the website design and layout, and later followed by the new webshop.

So the next chapter I reflect, is what are the most memorable coffees I've drunk in the last year, in this order.

5) Realising the Sumatran Mandheling Kuda Mas Estate was everything it promised. Rich, sweet, earthy and full bodied - Damn its good!!!
5) Tied equal is realising that if I mix it with the Mocha Harrar I get the most beautiful Mocha-Java blend ever!!!

4) The Costa Rican Tarrazu as a single origin ristretto. What can i say about this coffee. If it were a little more like cherry i could nail the flavours, if it had a little distinction in the aftertaste I'd call it annaseed, if it had a little more body it would be chocolate. How can this coffee give my tastebuds so much grief. Its beautiful and undescribable.

3) 1st shot pulled of the Heritage blend when, after working on it for months, one sip and I knew I had it!!!

2) I have a very biased preconception of Australian grown coffee. Not that its bad, but at the price it is you expect so much better. The first Vac-Pot of Mountain Top peaberry caught me completely by surprise expecting the absolute worse and instead finding a brilliant, silky smooth, chocolatey defying all preconceptions and blowing my mind, a coffee that had me confused with a well balanced Harrar.

1) First shot pulled from my ,then, new Diedrichs first roast. Sour and way too light for espresso - It was great!

That about sums it up.

Timor Organic - Full bodied coffee with long lasting after taste

Peru Grace Villa - A favorite here in the roastery, this is a great coffee. Very well balanced and smooth, nutty with a dry finish.

Mexican Altura - This is an Organically, high grown coffee. Another favorite here at the roastery. Full flavoured with sweet honey and caramel flavours.

Ethiopian Harrar - A full flavoured coffee with distinct dark fruit flavours and intense mouthfeel. Roasted darker than our other coffees.

CostaRican Tarrazu - A rich strong coffee with good acidity, comparable to a nice red wine.

Pioneer Blend - A full flavoured well rounded blend, full body, bright acidity, pleasant lasting aftertaste

Heritage Blend - Inspired by the dark Italian espresso blends, very bright full flavoured, slightly darker roasted coffee

Sunday Blend - A beautiful rich blend, distinctly chocolate flavours that redefine how we think coffee should taste, a must to try at least once.

All of our coffees are roasted to a medium colour unless otherwise stated

Today the roaster was installed and within minutes we were firing it up in order to have a play. The excitement has been brewing for the entire week leading up to the first firing, and let me tell you it was nothing short of brilliant. For myself, the first time on a Diedrich(what a beautiful machine) and for the others, the first witnessing of a real roaster in action. We started off easy with a few of the built in profiles, but after a few roasts I know I will be roasting all Easter weekend, working on my own profiles. Still an awesome day, and tomorrow, an awesome cup first thing.

Yesterday was the final day of framework. Over the next 3 days we should see the completion of the walls and ceiling and start getting some of the interior fitted. Everyone is excited as the big day draws nearer.

First off, I have to apologise for the lack of recent posting but it has been really hectic here lately.
Our progress to date: The landscaping is just about complete, except for the fact that somebody stole some plants, it is looking really good. The framework is up, the windows are in and it should all be boarded upthis week.

My roaster arrives tomorrow!!!! Can't wait! We have been tasting coffee samples from our suppliers, roasted on the air roaster, everyday for the last 2 weeks (its a tough job but somebody has to do it) and so far I have been impressed. I came across a Brazilian Monte Alegre for the first time,WOW! Haven't been that pleasantly surprised since the first time I tasted the Ethiopian Yirgacheffe or the Monsooned Malabar. It was simply supurb. We certainly are going to have an awesome set-up.

We are counting the days until we open at this point and we hope you are to.

This morning we stopped in Buderim to pick up some coffee trees. Well, tree might be an overstatement at this point but the seedlings should produce some good trees. The parent trees are from stock that has been grown in this area for the past 100 years.
